On September 11, 1980, philosopher J\u00fcrgen Habermas received the Theodor Adorno Prize in Frankfurt, Germany. His speech on this occasion, “Modernity: An Unfinished Project”, initiates debates on the nature of modernity and postmodernity, which have played a decisive role in understanding and making sense of these two conditions and the connections between them today.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
These debates began notably when Jean-Francois Lyotard countered Habermas in his 1982 article, \u201cAnswering the question: What is Postmodernism?\u201d<\/p>\n
The course will focus on the comparative discussion of these two texts, which posit the opposing positions of neo-enlightenment and postmodernism. We will also focus on examining alternatives to these texts, such as Frederic Jameson’s \u201cPostmodernism and consumer society\u201d. We will give a special analysis to the classic warp, referring to which the debaters confirm their positions.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
